Cosmo40은 인천 서구의 오래된 산업단지에 새로 자리잡은 문화공간이다. 40여년간 자리를 지켜왔던 코스모화학이 이전하면서 남겨진 건물 40동을 보수하고, 새로운 생명을 불어 넣을 수 있는 최소의 증축을 행했다. 재생건축을 현행법에 맞추려면 새 단열재와 내화페인트로 매력적인 흔적을 모두 지워야 한다. 이 모순에서 건축가의 상상은 시작된다. 새 건물이 옛 건물과 완벽하게 분리된다면?
Cosmo40은 <신관>이 연속된 하나의 고리모양을 하며 40년간 사용되고 버려진 공장 안으로 삽입된 건물이다. 이 고리는 주로 로비와 수직동선 역할을 하며, 옛 공장 공간의 새로운 사용을 지원한다. <신관>은 3층에서만 공장안으로 삽입되는데, 옛공장의 기둥을 둘러싸고 새로이 형성된 기둥묶음에 의해 지지된다. <신관>이 구조적으로 완벽하게 독립된 증축으로 인정받음으로써 기존 공장은 현행법규 충족의 부담에서 벗어나 특유의 분위기를 유지한 배경으로 남을 수 있다.
Cosmo40 is a new cultural space in an old industrial neighborhood in the city of Incheon, South Korea. The project gives new life to the abandoned ‘Building #40’ in Cosmo Chemical Plant by carefully inserting a new extension and updating old factory space with minimal intervention.
In factory regeneration projects, updating the old building to meet current regulations entails erasing everything that is attractive about the building with new insulation and fire-retardant paints. This conflict sparks the architect’s imagination. If there is a way to perfectly separate the old from the new, wouldn’t it be enough for only the extension to comply with current building regulations.
Cosmo40 is a building where a <Extension> is inserted into a 40-year-old deserted factory in the shape of a continuous ring. This ring mainly acts as lobbies and circulation supporting creative use of the old factory space. When <Extension> enters the old factory on the 3rd floor, it is supported by new column bundles placed around the original factory columns. This structural independence liberates the old factory from the burden of meeting current building codes. Thus, the ambiance of the old factory remains intact and becomes a background for the <Extension>.

벙커
보강을 위한 굴토 작업을 통해 드러난 기존공장의 기초구조물은 유적과 같은 신비함을 지니고 있었다. 증축을 위한 구조물이 더해진 상황을 그대로 보여주며 벙커공간으로 남게 되었다.

Underground structures unearthed during excavation of the foundation for reinforcement is left exposed in the bunker space to celebrate the relationship between the old column and the new column bundles.

보이드홀 (1-2층)
지층과 양쪽의 메자닌으로 구성된 저층부는 다양한 공연과 이벤트를 수용하기 위해 남겨진 10미터 높이의 빈 공간이다. 이 공간의 유일한 새로운 건축적 요소는 3층의 <신관>을 받치는 기둥묶음인데, 공간 전체의 분위기를 장악하고 순간적으로 변화시킬 수 있는 두꺼운 빛기둥으로 기능한다.
Void Hall (1-2F)
A ground floor with a 10m ceiling height and two mezzanine floors make up the lower level which will host various performances and events. The only new architectural element on the lower level is the column bundles that structurally support the extension. These column bundles also act as thick light columns that dictate and instantly change the ambience of the whole space.

호이스트홀 (3-4층)
옛 공장의 3층은 14미터 높이의 대공간이며, 기계 작동을 위해 부분적으로 설치되었던 그레이팅 바닥이 4층에 남아있다. 옛 공장은 <신관> 내부입면 전체를 아우르는 폴딩도어를 통해 분리가 되기도, 하나의 공간으로 연결되기도 한다. <신관>과 공장의 관계는 극명한 대비로 의도되었으며, 서로 다른 세월과 분위기의 중첩이 흥미로운 경험을 창출한다.
Hoist Hall (3-4F)
The third floor of the old factory is 14m high with some steel grating floors left on the fourth floor. Folding doors running through the entire elevation of the extension allow for connection to or separation from the old factory space. The relationship between the extension and the old factory was intended as a dramatic contrast, creating an interesting juxtaposition of different times and vibes.

CoSMo40는 삶것건축사사무소(양수인)에서 건축 디자인을, 보브종합건설(이창빈)에서 시공을, 프룹(허병욱)과 SML(임승모)에서 각각 1, 2차 내부 디자인을 맡았습니다. 또한 2019 인천광역시 건축상 대상 및 한국건축문화대상 우수상을 수상했습니다. 이후 2020년부터는 서비스센터에서 리브랜딩을 맡고 있습니다.
